So you have started to play poker and you have found yourself on a losing streak, heartbreaking, I know.Your natural born instincts are telling you to push on and try to recoup your losses. Well it is your money, and you most likely want to win it back, but continuing on during a losing streak is not always the best option.
You must remember that the game of poker demands a lot of concentration and skill to be successful. Learning how to be successful at poker, means you will need to learn how to deal with the losses, and of course, you will also need to learn how to deal with the wins too. Any successful poker player has learned to carefully balance their will power with their strategy. If you find yourself losing, your instincts will tell you to try and win your money back, this is not what a successful poker player would do. A successful player would take a break, clear their head, and rethink their strategy. It’s hard to think logically win you’re on a losing streak, believe me I know this from personal experience. Your best bet would be to stop and take a break. Re-thinking your strategy could put you in a better position to win your money back later on. It may also help you to develop a strategy that could put you way ahead of the competition.
Then again, losing a few hands here and there, could be made part of your initial strategy. I have, on more than one occasion, observed players winning big at a table, make big mistakes. Players that are winning big, tend to take risks, that they may otherwise not have taken, had they been losing. Some have even lost focus on the game, caused by the euphoria of winning.
Whenever you strategically lose to put yourself at a lower position than the other competitors, it enables you the ability to ‘read’ how your opponents are playing. This strategy also makes your opponents view you as less of a threat towards them. Much to your opponents dismay, at crunch time you can play at your skill level. When playing this strategy, remember to keep reign on your chips and of course your emotions. All too often, when amateurs use this strategy they overdo themselves and end up doing more harm than good for themselves. They tend to lose check on their emotions and let their pride get in the way. Just try to remember that when you are losing, you need to do so gracefully and logically. Always exercise your willpower, either use it to your advantage or simply get out while you still can; learn to cut your losses and come back later to secure a win.
